A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
