Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
